And the beat goes on…

Reading Time: 2 minutes

I freely admit to being a musicphile.  The music I grew up with is vastly different than the music that my friends did, as my parents were probably about 15-20 years older than theirs.  I know this because if my father had lived, this year he would have celebrated his 92nd birthday.  People in my graduating class whose parents are still alive, the parents are generally in their 70s now.  That being said, my tastes in music I think are still a bit different than my contemporaries.  Growing up I developed a taste for country music, but I also listened to a lot of big band music, as well as folk, what used to be called ‘easy listening’ and even dabbled a bit in opera and classical music.  I think the ‘Hooked on Classics’ craze that occurred in the early 1980s helped along my classical music interest.  Certainly every New Year’s Day, I’d watch on PBS the concert from Vienna, hosted by Walter Cronkite.  At the end of the concert, traditionally the conductor would lead the crowd in clapping to the Radetzky March.

I would say only in the last 20 years or so have I become more interested in the soundtracks of movies.  If one were to dredge up something from the 1970s it would be the music from Star Wars or the original Superman from 1978.   More recently, I’ve been using my membership to Spotify to compile playlists bringing together music from Pirates of the Carribean, Titanic, Jurassic Park and others, sharing them with my girl, for whom I purchased a gift card to the same service so that she could enjoy right along with me.  Being able to listen to my playlists in the car, through my smartphone, tablet and even PC (a’int technology wonderful?) via Bluetooth accessories makes it all the better.

The beat goes on…
